A New Perspective on Engineering

Hey everyone!

It seems that all too often engineering, particularly in development contexts,  is performed in a hierarchical approach, with the "experts" coming in and claiming to know much more than the locals about how things should be done. In doing so, these "experts" may loose sight of what local wisdom already exists about how to adapt and live within the local context.

The purpose of this blog is bring a new perspective on engineering knowledge, one that recognizes that there is wisdom to be learned from other practices, even if they seem foreign or strange to us. The writers of this blog are current, prospective or returned Peace Corps volunteers (PVCs) who are involved with the Peace Corps Master's International program at Michigan Technological University. Many are civil, environmental or mechanical engineering students interested in sharing the knowledge they find in their host communities and broadening the idea of what it means to be "developed".

I hope you enjoy reading this blog as it grows and we begin to present a new view of global engineering.

Thank you
